BLOWING UP HOCKEY: In an effort to stimulate growth in hockey, the Madsen Hockey Academy launched beach hockey with the Giba Plays inflatable sportsfield on Durban’s Main Beach last weekend. Some of South Africa’s under-21 players, along with local provincial players and Madsen Hockey Academy coaches played the initial matches to demonstrate the rules and skills. the players were thrilled with the game and soon mastered the format and skills. A group of players from Eston Primary School and their families joined to test out the new sport. It was met with a resounding positive response. The players are looking forward to getting this established as a new division of hockey that can be offered here in Durban. Being a coastal city with a great climate certainly is ideal for the setup of this sport. More than 30 countries already play beach hockey. The federation of International Hockey (FIH) have joined with Beach Hockey International to assist in the development and promotion of International Beach Hockey events.
